This is Kyusuk Kim. This article shows why international students have problems with applying to the universities in the U.S. There are five primary reasons: not doing research, not ask question, not planning ahead, not thinking about future, and bragging yourself.
ReplyDeleteInternational students should do some research about the university which they want to go. Students need to ask to the counselor in the university about applying and they will give them something important information. Also, international students should figure out the time how long does it take to get a visa. And they should think about their real and exact future. Finally, they must not brag themselves to the school because the school doesn't want to listen their boasts. So, they should avoid five mistakes when they apply to the universities in the U.S.
One suggestion that is really helpful for me it is the first one: Doing research. Doing research about the place is a really important way to help the student know how is the student life. For example, I am thinking to apply for BYU Hawaii but I already know from some teacher the living cost in Hawaii is expensive. So, I need to twice e program myself how i will overcome the expensive life there. Some of the steps I already did for the ELC like the research and planning the future. But i am thinking to apply for BYU Provo, so, i need to start some of the step soon.
ReplyDeleteI truly believe all of these steps are quite useful for all the international students. The biggest issue for some/most international students is a step#5-"not bragging about yourself". I gonna be honest, it was such a challenge for me as well. It might be difficult for the most of international students to talk about themselves, to let the world know how interesting they are, how wonderful their experience, and how strong their wish to accomplish a goal they have just because their culture is different from american one. I also know that such countries as Korea, Cambodia, Japan, Thailand, Burma, Mongolia, China, Kazakhstan, some parts of Russia teach all students from the kindergarten not to point themselves, be humble, be short in expressions about themselves. For students from these countries to talk about their positive sides and strength is considered as being self-centered. Moreover, it means being bad in their cultures. So, students from those regions might struggled until they overcome that "habit" and become more open, so the world can learn how special they are and wonderful.
ReplyDeleteWell, my point is, students have to know how to adjust to the new place, University, the weather, culture, etc. And in order to do that they should read more articles like this one, it really helpful, and try to be more open-minded. It helped me, I am telling it from my experience!

I would say that the most important advices are: not asking questions and not thinking about the future. I consider that asking questions is crucial to achieve your academic goals as well as professional. Besides that having an "international admissions counselor" is a great advantage that many universtities offer. Being aware about your future after graduate is decesive to prepare for you interview and your essay.
ReplyDeleteThe article describes the 5 common mistakes that international students make in their academic study process in US. According to this article, the first mistake is international students don't do research about schools and the place they are going to study. Another mistake is not contacting with admission of the schools. Next is they don't plan the schedule of school year, application terms, and visa process. The fourth common mistake is they don't think about the future. After they accomplished their primary goals, accepted in US academic programs, they should consider and scheme their near future and farther more after graduation plan. Finally, a personal essay is introduction of students, so make sure that it states them accurately. Overlooking or minimizing a statement essay of the application is the final common mistake for international students.
ReplyDeleteI am applying for BYU, Provo, and I have already taken some of these steps and I am taking some other ones.
ReplyDeleteThe most helpful one was the first one. Even though I have lived in the same city as the university I am applying for 13 months, so I am use to the weather and lifestyle, I have not done enough research about the university, its programs and benefits. I am sure I can find interesting facts and helpful information for me.
It was a very good, helpful, encouraging articles for me! Thank you! =)
I really liked when they talk about not asking questions. Personally, I don't take the enough time to ask, or to really do a research of the program that I want to get, or the university I want to go. I think I need to prepare myself to answer the questions I have first, so that I can answer currently to the questions I am going to have in the interview.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the author of this article. Sometimes as international students, we do not have the adequate information to choose which school to attend. However, I consider that many of the international students do not know how is live in another country until they live the experience. At least that happened to me. I did not know how difficult it was to adapt and to live in another culture. Also, how expensive it could be for us. Despite these difficulties, I think all of us made the right choice to come here to UT.
ReplyDeleteThis article has a very good advice for international students in USA. American universities have many international students but unfortunately, not all of them are aware of some issues they can have while they are studying there. Whereas, this article is a very good source where international students can find answers on all questions they have. ReplyDeleteThis is Pedro. The author of this articles gives us, International Students, great advises of how to apply to an American university and how to be prepared for student's life.
ReplyDeleteAmerican universities want their classrooms to reflect the interconnected world so They wish they had more international students. I think the most helpful advice was the last one, which suggested us to focus more on our personal essay, I didn't regard it as a very important part of my application. I think I should do more research about the college I want to go.
ReplyDeleteAll the 5 advices were applicable to me. I came here with a main goal: MBA in the Marriott School. But now, being here, I realized that I didnt research enough about it, and Im thinking seriously in a B plan now because Im doing all the research and following this 5 steps now.
